Unite backs Labour propositions in Queen's speech
A leading union has thrown its weight behind the current administration in light of the Queen's speech which underlined the stance of the Labour Party for the months leading up to the election.
Derek Simpson, the joint general secretary of Unite, explained that he and his colleagues see the "bleak vision of the future" put forward by the Conservative opposition as one which will be characterised by savage cuts to public services as well as making people work for longer and for less.
He continued: "Labour has set out a clear vision for a fairer society while supporting the economic recovery. Closing the gap between rich and poor and addressing gender inequality are proof that Labour stands for fairness."
Tony Woodley, his counterpart, urged the government to make sure that the necessary measures to end agency worker abuse are put into force before the next general election.
Yesterday (November 19th), Unite called on Lord Mandelson to intervene to save the Ericsson research and development plant in Coventry, which is due to close with the loss of 700 jobs in the next 12 months.
