TUC: Agency workers reforms are not highest priority

Despite a number of changes pleasing a major employment organisation, the decision not to address several other bills by the government could prove costly, it has said.

Speaking on behalf of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Brendan Barber said that it is "good news" for workers under these circumstances that agency work regulations will provide employees with equal treatment with permanent staff on pay and holidays following 12 weeks in a job.

However, he said that despite this being prioritised by the government, "there are important details to get right and they need to be in place before the end of this parliament not put off until late 2011".

Mr Barber said that the UK is now in an "excitable pre-election period" with limited time in the Houses of Parliament, yet there are many crucial issues that must be decided such as the completion of the equality bill.

Today (November 20th), the TUC called on employers to stop discriminating against transgender people at work, as part of marking Trans Memorial Day, noting that from January to June 2009, at least 83 transgender people were murdered across the world.
