Pension laws to face major change, says Harman

Harriet Harman has announced her intention to abolish the law which stops people from working past the age of 65.

The deputy leader of the Labour Party is in opposition to the notion that people are being forced out of work at the age of 65, sometimes without a redundancy payment or if they want to continue working.

As a result, the review of the law is to be brought forward by a year to 2010 in order to redress the situation in light of this attitude.

Ms Harman said: "People are remaining active and healthy well into their older years.

"But at the moment there is no legal backing for you if you want to stay at work, so what we are proposing is a massive public policy change."

Dr Ros Altmann, as reported on Citywire, explained that the scheme will likely bring a tangible benefit that will see people no longer being thrown on the scrapheap, adding that society alone will not be able to pay more out in pensions in future years.
