Tory stance 'has no place' in modern working environment

The possibility of a Conservative government will be the nail in the coffin for public sector pay and pensions, according to a leading union representative.

Dave Prentis, the general secretary of Unison, said it was not right for public sector workers to pay for the recession, though this may happen if David Cameron and his party come to power.

Commenting on pay, reward and employee benefits under a possible Tory government, the leader explained: "The Conservatives want to freeze public sector pay for the majority of public sector workers in 2011.

"And the tough pay rounds could last for five years. They have made clear too, their hostile intentions for public sector pensions, and are adopting an increasingly combative and aggressive stance towards public sector unions."

However, Mr Prentis asserted that the UK simply does not need a Labour Party that "apes" Conservative policies.

This week, Unison welcomed the announcement of £122.6 million of extra funding for building new council homes.
