Employee reward and benefits news

Canadian survey highlights need for motivation over pay

Canadian workers are not as motivated by pay, instead feeling rewarded by less obvious employee benefits, according to a new study.

In the poll by Kelly Services, it was discovered that when asked to name the one thing that would make an employee more committed to their job, 43 per cent claimed that "more interesting or challenging work" was a priority, while higher salary or employee benefits was best for 18 per cent.

Kelly Services vice-president and managing director of Canadian operations Karin French said that the things that motivate people in the workplace include opportunities for personal growth and development, as well as the chance to perform stimulating work.

She continued: "Pay is certainly a factor, but in many cases, it is not the most important motivator. Employers need to examine the right mix of employee engagement methods and features that will have the most positive impact on their workforce."

Recently, the Trades Union Congress has asserted that companies looking to reduce outgoings by freezing wages cannot expect an easy time from unions in the coming months.
