Employee reward and benefits news

Economic storm 'not over yet, says PM; freezes wages

Prime minister Gordon Brown has announced this week that senior public sector staff are being subject to pay freezes, explaining that that the current financial climate will continue.

The leader revealed that there will be no increase in base pay or the employee reward pot for 2010-11, adding that those affected include senior civil service staff, the judiciary, military and NHS.

It is hoped that by carrying out such a manoeuvre, the government will save in excess of £3 billion in around three years, with Mr Brown adding that the government will do all it can to protect the usually high-performing economy.

The action was in response to the 32nd Report of the Review Body on Senior Salaries, to which the PM said: "The government has decided to accept some but not all of its recommendations.

"It is important in the present economic climate that senior staff in the public sector show leadership in the exercise of pay restraint."

This week, the PM visited the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to lead the tributes to war dead at the rededication of the Basra Memorial Wall, which was relocated from its place in Iraq following its creation in 2006.
