Private sector recruitment 'will not compensate' for public sector job cuts

A marginal rise in recruitment levels in the private sector will not be enough to make up the predicted job loss on the public sector warned an industry expert.

Martin Warnes, director of reed.co.uk, said: "This gentle increase in private sector demand for new workers is not yet anything enough to compensate for [the] proposed public sector job losses."

He pointed out that companies in the private sector were becoming aware that they were facing increased risks of future skills shortages as Britain's economy slowly climbs out of the global economic downturn.

Mr Warnes predicted that this knowledge could lead to a rise in recruitment opportunities in as many as 30 segments of the private sector.

His comments follow in the wake of the hurriedly published Office of Budget Responsibility, after a media leak, which indicated that 600,000 public sector jobs are likely to be cut as the government struggles to tackle the budget deficits and bring spending under control.
