Equality Act to be implemented in October
The Conservative-Liberal Democrats government has announced that the Equality Act will come into effect in October this year.
This act is a combination of seven pieces of legislation and has been simplified to help businesses adhere to anti-discrimination policies.
Home secretary and minister for women and equality Theresa May said: "By making the law easier to understand, the Equality Act will help business treat staff fairly and meet the needs of a diverse customer base.
"The law will be easier to understand and better able to protect people from discrimination."
It has been designed to protect the employee benefits and rights of disabled workers as well as to eradicate ageism in workplaces.
The Act will also prohibit employers from using pay secrecy policies in order to prevent members of staff from discussing their wages with each other.
However, employers will not be required to release the salaries of their male and female workers, as had been proposed by the former Labour government.
