Backdated pensions make their way to homes in Scotland

Over £4 million has been added to the incomes of 2,500 Scottish pensioners who did not know they were entitled to the money, boosting pension pots.

It follows a £1 million investment by the Scottish Government into a range of welfare rights projects, which Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil has described as nothing short of "spectacular".

In one case, a couple secured £34,600 worth of backdated pension payments while another couple saw their weekly income rise by over £310, though these claims represent only a fraction of the possible £5.4 billion of benefits unclaimed by older people in the UK every year.

Mr Neil said that these groundbreaking projects "have delivered spectacular results".

He added: "As a direct result of Linkwide's proactive approach, contacting older people directly and offering services in their own homes, many lives have been changed dramatically for the better."

Prior to the next Scottish Budget, the first of a series of nationwide meetings was held this week to listen to views directly relating to the needs of the people.
