Sexist employers 'will have to conduct gender pay audit'

Employers who are found guilty of sex discrimination when it comes to pay will be forced to conduct a gender pay audit, equalities minister Lynne Featherstone has said.

In a written statement to parliament, she explained the move as part of the government's response to the Modern Workplaces consultation.

She said: "An employment tribunal which finds that an employer has discriminated on grounds of sex in contractual or non-contractual pay will be obliged to order the employer to conduct a pay audit in cases where continuing discrimination is likely."

However, if the employer has completed an audit in the past three years, has transparent pay practises or could show a good reason why it would not be useful, they will not have to conduct the procedure.

Furthermore, micro businesses that employ five people or less will be exempt from the proposals at first.

A government consultation later this year will give details on how the audits will work and what companies will have to publish.
