Employee engagement 'essential for business'

Businesses can only succeed if they understand the "needs, abilities and motivation" of their staff, one expert has said, maintaining that employee engagement is key.

Kevin Friery, clinical director at Right Management Workplace Wellness, said that the current economic climate has led to a "significant change" in the relationship between employer and worker.

"This has been summed up well at the World Economic Forum as the 'Human Age', in which people are the main asset of a business and employee engagement is a critical success factor," he explained.

He nodded towards the economic challenge businesses are facing of delivering more with fewer resources, saying that it is vital that businesses create a psychological contract that supports the needs of their staff.

"By acting in this way the business achieves better productivity whilst growing and retaining talented people; in addition, good staff relationships form a cornerstone of corporate social responsibility," Mr Friery said.

Thomsons Online Benefits demonstrates how an effective employee engagement programme can help you to achieve real value for every pound you spend on reward.
