Warburtons staff to vote on strike over pay
Bolton staff at a well-known baking firm are set to vote on whether they should strike after negotiations with bosses failed to end in agreement.
Employees at two Warburtons sites in the town are to make the important decision of whether to take industrial action via a "consultative ballot", the Bolton News reported.
The dispute centres on the employer's unwillingness to change the initial offer of a two per cent pay rise.
This has been met with overwhelming disappointment, with 95 per cent of workers rejecting the tender.
"This is a company with a £550 million turnover, who last year," an anonymous employees told the newspaper.
"They gave £4.7 million in bonuses between 17 directors but our last pay rise was 16 months ago. The union feels that is unsatisfactory and I think it is an insult."
In related news, it was revealed that Warbutons experienced a 37 per cent drop in profits in 2011 to £16.3 million, compared to 2010, which saw the bakery make £23 million.
