Lack of employer support impacting on UK careers

UK staff are falling behind on their career paths due to a lack of employer support, according to experts, indicating that employee benefits and training could put them on the road to success.

Recruitment agency Office Angels found that Londoners felt they were best supported by their bosses, with 20 per cent saying they had been provided with a personal development plan.

However, almost three-quarters of UK workers confessed they had either no career plan at all, or one that only looks ahead by one or two years.

Just one in 20 of the respondents said they had their career path planned for the next six to ten years, and more than a third said they felt behind in their career.

It appears that many people could be demoralised as one in five said their career plan was not on track at all.

Steven Kirkpatrick, managing director at the recruitment company, told HR Magazine: "Many workers have taken a short term, unstructured approach to career planning in response to recent job market uncertainty, so it comes as no surprise that over a third feel they are falling behind in their careers."

Thomsons Online Benefits can help you to derive real value from your employee benefits scheme, ensuring it meets your business objectives and engages employees.
