UK gender pay gap 'wider than European average'

The gap between the average earnings of male and female workers in the UK is wider than the European average, the latest figures reveal.

Data published by the EU Commission reveals that the difference between the hourly earnings of men and women is 16 per cent across the EU, though this is 19 per cent when only the UK is taken into account.

The figures were released ahead of an EU Business Forum, which will see 150 companies from across the continent come together to debate how the gender balance problem can be tackled through fairer pay reward schemes and better working practices.

Viviane Reding, the EU's Justice Commissioner, said that while the pay gap has declined in recent years, there is "no reason to celebrate".

"The pay gap is still very large and much of the change actually resulted from a decline in men's earnings rather than an increase for women," she added.
